Feline pancreatitis remains an elusive disease to diagnose and treat. Much of the diagnostic and treatment dilemma can be attributed to the fact that pancreatitis is a systemic disease that affects more than just the pancreas, and it is often accompanied by concurrent disease. Also, patient history and clinical signs of feline pancreatitis are non-specific. Advances in understanding pathophysiology, imaging, other non-invasive diagnostics, coupled with case experience have improved veterinarians’ recognition and treatment of feline pancreatitis. Nonetheless, treatment for feline pancreatitis remains symptomatic and supportive, and resources for prevention or specific treatment of pancreatitis are still lacking.
Learning Objectives:

  • Familiarize with pancreatic physiology and pathophysiology
  • Recognize clinical picture and when to suspect pancreatitis
  • Understand how to diagnose pancreatitis Recall potential complications of pancreatitis and common concurrent diseases
  • Formulate individual patient treatment plan and follow-up based upon problem list
