This three-day course is designed for veterinary assistants/veterinary nurses who are interested in developing and improving their professional knowledge and practical skills. The instructors are veterinary nurses with extensive postgraduate training and many years’ experience, working in a modern veterinary orthopaedic hospital in Manchester, UK. The course will cover most of the aspects of veterinary care including:

Course schedule

1 Day

Veterinary Care:

Morning

• Caring for the hospitalised patient
• Patient safety
• Patient nutrition
• Care of catheters and probes
• Pain monitoring (Glasgow pain score and others)
• Multimodal analgesia

Afternoon

Practical exercises:

• Intravenous cannula application
• Calculating the dose of intravenous therapy
• Blood collection

Bandaging

• Bandaging techniques
• Dressing management

2 Day

Anaesthesia and sedation:

• Pharmacology
• Side effects
• Calculation of doses
• Planes of anaesthesia
• Intubation
• Selection of the appropriate anaesthetic circuit
• Safety check of the anaesthetic machine
• Recovery from anaesthesia
• Anaesthetic monitoring – pressure, pulse, capnography, ECG
• Management of hypothermia in anaesthesia
• Management of hypotension in anaesthesia
• Management of hypercapnia in anaesthesia

3 Day

Critical patient care, preparation for surgery, radiography:

Morning

• Gastric dilatation and torsion
• Dystocia
• Respiratory disturbances
• Cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Afternoon

Preparing the patient for surgery:

• Preparing the patient
• Proper donning of gloves and operative gloves. Preparation of gloves and gown
• Quarter covering the patient and preparing the instruments

Radiography

• Positioning basics
